Deciding what stamp pad to get for your cute stamp collection can be hard, especially since there are so many out there! We compared 4 types of stamp pads across 3 of the most common journals in the stationery community and tested for bleeding, ghosting, and compatibility with a water-based marker.

Stamp Pads
Solvent-based: Tsukineko StazOn Midi Ink Pad in Jet Black
Made for stamping on glass, metal, shrink plastic, cellophane, aluminum foil, leather and acrylic surfaces.
Pigment-based: Tsukineko Brilliance Dew Drop Ink Pad in Coffee Bean
These water-resistant, archival quality, and semi-opaque inks are very moist and stand the test of time as they can be used on various surfaces such as paper, photos, vellum, wood, polymer clay, and leather.
Chalk-based: Tsukineko VersaMagic Dew Drop Ink Pad in Midnight Black
Water-resistant, archival quality, and semi-opaque matte inks.
Oil based pigment: Shachihata Oil-Based Ink Pad - Iromoyo 1925 - Special Edition in Black
Oil-based pigment ink produces a sharper and brighter result than a standard ink pad. It also dries fast and waterproof.
Paper
Leuchtturm1917 Dot Grid: Slightly coated, 80gsm.
MD Notebook - A6 - Grid: Noncoated, 80-90gsm.
Tomoe River S: Coated, 52gsm.
The Results
Bleeding: Solvent-based performed the worst, with minor bleeding on the MD and Leuchtturm1917 papers but severe bleeding on the thinner Tomoe River S paper.
Ghosting: Most noticeable with the oil-based stamp across the 3 papers.
Compatibility with water-based marker: Slight smudging with the chalk-based stamp on the Leuchtturm1917 paper.
